Darien Family Home

The owners of this Darien home purchased it for its idyllic location. Set on a quiet road adjacent to conservation land, it gave them a sense of privacy and felt like the perfect place to raise their young children, however their family soon outgrew the original house. Rather than move to a new location, they decided to renovate, adding an addition that would meet the needs of their family while maintaining the charm and scale of the original 1930s design.

Our challenge was to keep the addition in scale with the existing house. To this end, we installed dormers above the second floor windows, added a cupola and a new front porch, giving the original part of the house more visual weight. Bedrooms were tucked under the eaves with dormered windows, minimizing the height of the new wings.

We designed custom moldings and paneling to give the new areas of the home a sense of age and substance. Meanwhile custom cabinetry meets the practical storage and organizational needs of a large family while adding to the home’s traditional aesthetic.

Completed in two phases, the family was able to continue to continue to live in the house throughout the renovation.
